4 Types Of Rust Protection To Choose For Your Vehicle

Posted on: 12 December 2016

Rust protection for your vehicle is definitely something to consider if you live in a wet climate. Things such as rain and salt on the roads can easily cause rust, especially on the undercarriage of your vehicle. If you believe rust protection can help your vehicle because you live in a wet climate, you will want to know what options you have. Here are four types of rust protection to choose from:

  1. Electronic Method: The electronic method of rust protection is a virtually new concept. However, dealerships will install it for you when you purchase your vehicle or you can have it done by an auto mechanic. What this does is send a small electric current through the undercarriage of the vehicle that will prevent rusting from occurring.
  2. Undercoating: Undercoating is another option that is tried and true. However, it requires professionals. This is because if the undercoating tar substance is not applied correctly, it can crack and cause damage to the components on the undercarriage. Keep in mind that's this is usually cheaper than the electronic method, though and it lasts for a long period of time.
  3. Dripless Oil Spray: Dripless oil spray is one of the most affordable options, but there are downsides to this. For example, you will have to drill holes into specific areas on the undercarriage of the vehicle and it doesn't last for a very long period of time. However, this may be an ideal option if you are looking for something affordable that you just need for the winter season when there is salt on the road.
  4. Drip Oil Spray: The benefit of drip oil spray over dripless is that it gets to more areas of the car because it doesn't dry as quickly. On top of this, it lasts a bit longer. The only downside is that it can drip for up to two days, which means that oil is going to drip where you park. For this reason, you may want to avoid parking in the driveway or garage until the oil dries.

When you know these four options for rust protection, you can choose the right type for your vehicle. Be sure to talk to the professionals about your options if you still aren't sure what is best. They will be able to recommend the right one based on your budget, the climate in which you live, and your driving habits.
